Overview & important update
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program historically offered doctoral awards ($50,000/year for 3 years). As of 2025 the Vanier program was transitioned and the federal granting agencies harmonized doctoral scholarships into the new Canada Graduate Research Scholarship — Doctoral (CGRS-D) / CRTAS suite. The Vanier program notice now directs applicants to the new harmonized program. Always consult the Vanier page and Tri-agency sites for the latest guidance. vanier.gc.ca
Why this matters
- If a scholar looks for Vanier deadlines, they should instead check the CGRS-D / Tri-agency pages and university nomination processes for the current competition rules.
Step-by-step (if you planned for Vanier / now CGRS-D)
- Read the Vanier page for the official notice — it points to the harmonized program. vanier.gc.ca
- Switch to Tri-agency (CGRS-D) preparation — contact your university graduate office to learn the internal nomination steps and deadlines. nserc-crsng.gc.ca
- Prepare the strong application materials (research case, supervisor letters) as for any national doctoral competition.
